Product Development Internship

Writer's picture: Christopher BettencourtChristopher Bettencourt

This internship gave me extensive experience working with raw materials to prototype an invention from scratch. With little oversight and working alone for one summer, a prototype was designed, built, and tested.

In product development, selecting the right components to accomplish a specific task is of paramount importance. Each component plays a critical role in determining the overall functionality, performance, and reliability of the final product. By carefully choosing components tailored to the task at hand, we ensure that the product meets its intended purpose with precision and efficiency. A well-thought-out component selection process can lead to optimized designs, streamlined manufacturing, and cost-effectiveness. Whether it's electrical, mechanical, or software components, the careful selection process is the foundation of successful product development, resulting in a superior end product that exceeds expectations and stands out in the market.

Below are some images of the prototype. Its application is proprietary information. Nearly all the components were 3D printed or machined by hand.

Testing rotary dampers to decrease speed of motion:

Experimenting with folding stands:

Testing carriage slowdown using eddy current braking:

Testing gripping mechanisms with machined and 3D printed parts assisted by torsion springs. The carriage was lifted using a constant force spring.
